Top Tips for Teachers

Teaching is rewarding, but it can also be demanding. Between lesson planning, marking, meetings, parent communication, and classroom management, it is easy for teachers to feel stretched thin.

Here are four simple ways to make the school year feel a little more manageable.

 1. Plan Ahead — But Stay Flexible

Having a clear plan for the week can reduce a lot of unnecessary stress. Preparing lessons, resources, and key deadlines in advance means fewer last-minute scrambles.

At the same time, classrooms are unpredictable. A lesson may take longer than expected, students may need extra support, or plans may suddenly change. Leave yourself some flexibility rather than trying to plan every minute perfectly.

 2. Create Systems for Repetitive Tasks

Teachers complete many of the same tasks again and again. Templates for parent emails, marking rubrics, lesson structures, homework instructions, and classroom routines can save a surprising amount of time.

The less time you spend recreating routine materials, the more time you can spend focusing on teaching and supporting students.

3. Don’t Try to Mark Everything

Not every piece of student work needs detailed written feedback.

Some activities can be self-marked, peer reviewed, discussed as a class, or checked quickly for completion. Save your most detailed feedback for assignments where students will genuinely benefit from individual guidance.

Using a consistent rubric or feedback structure can also make marking faster and clearer.

4. Set Boundaries Around Your Time

Teaching can easily expand to fill every available hour.

There will always be another email to answer, resource to improve, or lesson to adjust. Where possible, decide when your working day ends and protect some time away from schoolwork.

A lesson does not always need to be perfect to be effective.

Final Thoughts

Surviving the school year is not about doing everything perfectly. Good systems, realistic expectations, and sensible boundaries can make a big difference.

Finding small ways to reduce your workload can help you save your time and energy for the part of teaching that matters most: supporting your students.
