Back-to-School Checklist for Parents and Students

A new school year is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Between buying school supplies, adjusting sleep schedules, and preparing for new teachers and classes, there's a lot to think about.

The good news is that a little preparation can make the first few weeks much less stressful. By taking care of a few important tasks before school begins, parents and students can start the year feeling organised, confident, and ready to learn.

Here are five things to include on your back-to-school checklist.

1. Re-establish School Routines

Summer schedules are often much more relaxed than the school year.

A week or two before school starts, begin shifting bedtime and wake-up times closer to the school routine. Practice morning routines, organise school bags the night before, and establish regular meal times.

Starting these habits early makes the first week of school much easier for everyone.

2. Organise School Supplies and Learning Space

Having everything ready before the first day helps students feel prepared.

Check that school supplies are stocked, devices are charged if needed, and backpacks are organised. It's also helpful to create a quiet space at home where homework and reading can be completed without distractions.

Being organised helps students focus on learning rather than searching for missing materials.

3. Refresh Reading and Writing Skills

After a long summer break, it's normal for students to feel a little rusty.

Before school begins, encourage your child to spend a little time reading each day and completing a few short writing activities. They might write about their summer, review a favourite book, or respond to a simple writing prompt.

A little practice now can make the transition back to classroom writing much smoother.

4. Set Goals for the New School Year

The beginning of the year is a great time to think about what success looks like.

Talk with your child about one or two realistic goals they would like to achieve. These could include reading more books, becoming more organised, improving writing skills, or participating more confidently in class.

Simple, achievable goals give students something positive to work towards throughout the year.

5. Start With a Positive Mindset

Every new school year is a fresh start.

Whether last year was challenging or highly successful, encourage your child to focus on the opportunities ahead. Remind them that learning takes time, mistakes are part of the process, and every student grows at their own pace.

A positive attitude can make a big difference when adjusting to new teachers, classmates, and routines.

Preparing for a new school year doesn't have to be stressful. By establishing routines, organising supplies, refreshing academic skills, setting goals, and approaching the year with confidence, families can help students start school feeling ready to succeed.

At Route2Write, we're excited to support students throughout the school year with self-paced writing courses that build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and prepare learners for success across every subject. Starting strong is often the first step towards a successful year.
